Music, they say, soothes the savage beast and this is so true when we consider how music in its magical way works on our body rhythms bring harmony, literally, back into the body.

A story is told in the Bible of a King named Saul, who had an evil spirit that would torment him and make him feel terrible. It was suggested that they find someone who could play he harp and then the evil spirit would leave and King Saul would feel better. So they searched and found a young shepherd boy named David and he was commissioned to play for Saul whenever the evil spirit came upon him.

Whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would take his harp and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him. 1 Samuel 16:23(KJV)

Researchers have found that certain types of music are more uplifting to the soul than others. Although you may think that a way to relax would be to listen to your favorite rock band, you are sadly mistaken. This will only rev up your engines and make you more stressed than when you started out. No, the way to personal harmony must come from a very specific kind of music. Not all music relaxes, you must personally feel more relaxed, your breathing must become slower and deeper for music to have a relaxing effect on you.

According to composer and music researcher Stephen Halpern Ph.D., “Music is not all that meets the ear. If you were to have earplugs in your ears, you cold still ‘feel the music’” he explains. “That’s because music is vibrations. And these vibrations affect your heartbeat, blood flow, brain waves – your entire body chemistry.

So it is by our body responses that we can tell if music is truly relaxing us or not.

In order to truly enjoy the music it is best if you can get yourself focused on it by either sitting still or lying down and really soak it in.

I realize that there are times when you just can’t do this and just listening while going about your work is better than nothing, but it will not have the same effect as actually absorbing yourself in it.

I personally love to just run a hot bath with my favorite aroma, lavender. Then I light candles around the bathroom and turn off all of the lights. This is my special time when I can relax and toss away the cares of the day. In the living room, right next to the bathroom, I have beautiful classical or new age music playing softly. As it permeates the room, mixed with the scent of my bath and candles, I am in another world, totally relaxed without a care in the world.

Music, in my view, is the most influential and powerful therapy that you can provide yourself. It not only affects your soul, but your body and spirit as well.

April 29-30, 2006 live from New York Citys Radio City Music Hall, its one of the biggest events of the year! Is it the Rockettes? No. Maybe its that dreamed of Beatles reunion?? No. Then it must be the latest country music awards show! Not at all.

Its the one draft that wont give you a chill. If anything, this draft sparks the beginning of the 2006-07 NFL season, and yet, theres not one play run, one signal called, or one zebra in sight. It is the only non-sporting sports event of its kind-the NFL Draft.

Its a time when fans that can never get enough football are glued to their televisions and computers, when college football players from around the country say an extra prayer or two, and when professional football coaches and general managers make decisions that can make or break their upcoming season.

Everyone is looking for that “impact” player-a guy who can make a big difference on a team in their initial season. Of the 32 NFL clubs, 14 had losing records and ten were 5-11 or worse last season. These are the teams that need to desperately improve and due to their poor records, they get to pick first. That means organizations like Pittsburgh, Seattle, and Denver-those who had winning seasons and went deep into the playoffs-will be at the end of the line this year.

For a college player to be a top-ten pick, they need to have a few things going for them. First, they must be one of the best at their position. They also need to be a good fit with the team thats picking. Finally, theres that “impact” factor, which can trump whether the player is a good fit with a particular team. Running back Reggie Bush (USC), quarterback Matt Leinart (USC), and defensive end Mario Williams (North Carolina State) are all top players but only one can go first. On April 29th, it looks like Reggie Bush will be the player chosen number one in the draft.

The Houston Texans have the first pick and its projected that they are going to choose a high profile money player. They can actually use a defensive force like Mario Williams, but chances are they will go with Bush. Why? Running backs like Bush are rare. Along with winning the 2005 Heisman Trophy, Bush shattered school records and was an All-American. Hes a hard worker with great acceleration and the ability to elude defenders by quickly changing direction.

However, running backs probably get punished the most in an NFL season, which means they have a very limited shelf life. Great running backs tend to show signs of wear and tear by their tenth year, which often manifests itself in reduced output and reoccurring injuries. The one concern about Bush is his durability. He has had shoulder surgery, and hes small by NFL standards. By the way, although its almost certain that Bush will go first, it is not a given that Houston will pick first.

The Texans may trade down with another team, like the New York Jets, giving them the first pick. The Jets certainly need offense. However, if New York does trade for the top spot, they may actually not choose Bush. The Jets quarterback situation is tenuous and that makes USCs Matt Leinart an attractive pick.

Leinart stands 6 5″ and is a smart player with excellent decision-making abilities. These are great attributes for a NFL QB. In the pocket, he is accurate, consistent, and possesses fine field vision. The one knock is his mobility, which is not an uncommon problem for quarterbacks.

If the Texans trade with another team and move down that will also complicate the draft, especially for New Orleans. The Saints really need a quarterback and would definitely take Lineart-a player that most experts believe could start in his first pro season. The choices for the Saints would then become quarterback Vince Young (Texas) or a defensive player such as Williams, defense tackle Haloti Ngata (Oregon), safety Michael Huff (Texas) or safety Jimmy Williams (Virginia Tech).

Vince Young led his Texas Longhorns to the National Championship against USC this year. Hes an amazing athlete with great arm strength, fine mobility, and great running ability. However he needs to mature more as a passer and would probably suffer as a first-year starter. Presently, theres concern about his accuracy, which can be improved over time. Perhaps the biggest downside on Young is one of his upsides-his running ability. In the NFL, unlike the college ranks, quarterbacks who run, like Atlantas Michael Vic, can become injury ridden and mistake prone.

Mario Williams, who is projected to go third to the Tennessee Titans, is big, athletic, and quick. At 6 7″ and 290 pounds hes got NFL size, power, and speed. The Titans are in need of a speedy defensive player. Williams can be effective immediately.

Green Bay really needs to upgrade its defensive and offensive line, which means its well positioned in the draft. It will have numerous choices, including offensive standouts DBrickashaw Ferguson (Virginia) and A.J. Hawk (Ohio State) and, on defense, safeties Michael Huff (Texas) and Jimmy Williams (Virginia Tech) and defensive tackle Ngata.

Ferguson has been a constant standout at Virginia and should be the first offensive tackle taken in the draft. Hes big, quick, and hard working and would be an immediate force for the Jets, Packers or 49ers. A.J. Hawk should be a solid professional offensive linebacker; although his college career was spent on “D,” many believe he lacks the size to play that side of the ball in the pros. Hawk is explosive, tough, and hard working with excellent football instincts.

Safety Michael Huff could be a perfect match at corner back for the San Francisco 49ers. He possesses fine instincts, coverage awareness, and closing speed. He reads quarterbacks well, which may be the tradeoff teams take in lieu of his small size. San Francisco needs someone like Huff, who can start immediately and will learn quickly.

University of Maryland tight end Vernon Davis has strength, quickness off the line, and great hands and concentration-all of which should serve him well in the pros. Hes small for a NFL tight end and may be more adept at wide receiver. Any team would be better with the addition of Davis but the Arizona Cardinals could really use a player like this on offense.

College standout Jimmy Williams looks destined to be a solid NFL safety. Hes aggressive, tough, and fast but must improve in terms of coverage awareness. Oakland, Buffalo, and San Francisco can all benefit from his skills and drive.

Haloti Ngata is a great defensive force with size, speed, and strength. He has the potential to be a premiere defensive lineman, constantly controlling the line of scrimmage. Hes also shown a lot of potential towards improving his technique, which gives him a big upside. He may go to Detroit, but the Houston Texans team can really use this player, while the Lions are looking for a quarterback. If these two teams trade draft slots or draft picks, it could benefit both.

The top ten prospects-Reggie Bush (RB), Matt Leinart (QB), Mario Williams (DE), DBrickashaw Ferguson (OT), A.J. Hawk (OLB), Michael Huff (S), Vernon Davis (TE), Jimmy Williams (S), Haloti Ngata (DT) and Vince Young (QB)-will be in the forefront of this years draft. Chances are three or four of these players will go on to have long NFL careers. Right now, these ten men show all the promise in the world. Soon, theyll be asked to work harder, think more, and develop greater skill levels than they ever have before.

Those who survive and flourish will be the ones who can adapt the best and work the hardest, relying on more than just the talent that got them there. 1. Think about the types of things in your everyday life that you find unusual, ridiculous, hard-to-understand, silly or embarrassing.

2. Come up with a way to express one of these things in a way that leads the mind in one direction. Then, suddenly shift direction with the final part. This is the setup/punchline structure of humor.

3. For a given idea, generate as many setup/punchline variations as you can. Keep pushing to generate them, even when you think you can’t come up with any more. The ones you fight hard for are usually the funnier ones.

4. Try to make your humor express your final point in an indirect way. It’s funnier to say someone could use “subsidies of something” than to say someone “someone doesn’t have much something.”

5. With each setup/punchline, play with the words to try to make your humor brief and to the point. Wordy “humor” generally is not as funny as brief humor.

6. Try to hide the final destination of your humorous setup/punchline until the very end. You want the punch of your humor to be showcased at the end, with nothing trailing it to drain the funny part away.

7. Practice on a regular basis. Keep what’s funny and toss what’s not funny. You’ll have to use your best judgment here. This is easier to do if you set what you’ve written aside for a few days. Then, come back later and review it. Many of the lines that lack humor will stick out like a sore thumb.

Here’s an example of how I created a funny line:

- The word “imagination” popped into my mind, and I thought about how insulting it is to be accused of having no imagination.

- I wondered what group could I insult without really offending anyone. Politicians are always a good target.

- I then tried to figure out how I could accuse politicians of having no imagination.

- For the setup I wanted to suggest that I was going to compliment politicians by saying they had a lot of imagination. So I thought, “With the amount of imagination politicians have ….”

- I tried to think of a way to indirectly say someone has no imagination. My approach was “… they should qualify for government subsidies.”

- The result was:

With the amount of imagination
politicians have, they should
qualify for government subsidies.

If you don’t find that line funny, that’s OK. Your sense of humor may be different than mine. And that’s fine. Humor is very subjective, and there is a wide variety in the things people find funny. Also, analyzing the creation of a joke step-by-step, like we did above, has a tendency to kill the humor as you go.

This is the process I’m using on a regular basis to create fresh humor for my thought for the day web site. It’s not an easy task, but it’s fun and satisfying when the funny pours out. And it’s great to think that maybe I’ve added a little humor to the middle of someone’s day, maybe just at the point where the person’s daily stress was about to overwhelm them. If youre not from rural America, you probably do not realize that in small towns or on American Indian lands, people still greet each other by waving or raising their hand off the steering wheel for a second. If you are from a more rural environment, the crowded city is a Crocodile Dundee-type culture shock. There are exceptions however. Ever noticed how motorcycle riders acknowledge each other on the road? No matter if the rider is a lifelong Harley dude, a Gold Wing cruiser, a newby, or a grizzled veteran, they all lower a hand toward the road to say hey when another motorcycle passes in the opposite direction. Big rig truckers have more communication signals than some peoples vocabulary. The road has become a permanent fixture in American culture with a continuously expanding language, unique customs, and growing citizenry (yes, many people have actually given up their land-bound homes to live on the road).

So what, you say? While as a person who has studied communication extensively, I find this phenomenon fascinating. It speaks to a bond and shared subcultures that transcend, if only momentarily, the pervasive divisions of economic status, race, gender, geography, and age. As a strengths-based practitioner, I think simple salutations have within them a certain power that might be harnessed in other ways.

As a long time Volkswagen owner, I have a proposal. First let me outline a couple of assumptions. Based on my own admittedly biased perspective I am asserting that most VW owners are better than average drivers with a high degree of alertness, a value of safety features, and an appreciation for smart, responsive engineering (word to the insurance companies). We like enjoying our music, asserting our individuality, and finding ways to cleverly comment on societal inconsistencies via bumper stickers, even if they are sometimes taped in the window to preserve the paint job. VW owners also seem to be more likely to go hiking or engage in other outdoor pursuits (according to a recent VW commercial, not my own habits) and I also think they tend to be a peace-loving people, regardless of political party affiliation.

Thus, I think we should start greeting each other on the road with a peace sign. It doesnt have to be flashyjust two fingers raised in a V on the steering wheel will do (is it a coincidence that the peace sign is a V? I think not). If you feel exuberant, stick your hand up out of your sun roof. On a motorcycle it is generally the driver who makes the sign, but in a car you can have more people participate much in the way slug bug games used to preoccupy my youth. Having more drivers on the lookout for peace, sending peace as a message, and promoting peace in a humorous way will likely have a much greater impact than angry epitaphs aimed at the government. It will raise positive endorphins, increase a sense of community, and make people smile, which as research has shown is good for your mental (and physical) health.

So, VW drivers, unite! Hippies, yuppies, anarchists, skaters, skiers, bikers, cyclists, church ladies, diplomats, however you see yourself and whoever you are! If youre VW owner and a biker, you can add one more thing to your repertoire. If youre also a trucker, you will soon be even more of a virtuoso on the road.

This simple practice can remind us of how many people in the world just want to live in peace, chill out with their homies, and jam to some tunes. By constantly putting off peace in our personal life and our own communities, we are not changing the world for the better to the highest degree that we can because we are wasting the potential of our collective habits. Lets try being creatively peaceful every day. Its not really that complicated. Then, should push come to shove, well be alert, healthy peacemongers in fast cars.
